If you're a Deadhead or just a fan of good vibes, great music, and marine conservation, the annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash at the Green Parrot Bar in Key West, Florida, is the event you won't want to miss. What started as a small fundraiser has evolved into a full-blown celebration that draws a packed house year after year. But it's more than just a party—it's a gathering of like-minded folks who care about our oceans and want to have a good time for a good cause.
How It All Began
In 2016, Grateful Diver founder Coley Faircloth organized a fundraiser to support Reef Relief’s efforts to protect coral reefs. With no event planning experience but a whole lot of passion, Coley, with the help of his good friend Maggie Howes, threw together the first Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash. (His first use of the Grateful Diver logo was to promote the event!) And boy, has it grown since then! What started as a modest event has turned into Reef Relief's largest annual fundraiser.
About Reef Relief & Their Mission
Reef Relief is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting coral reef ecosystems through education, advocacy, and community involvement. They work tirelessly to ensure our oceans remain vibrant and full of life — advocating for policies and practices that reduce pollution, promoting marine conservation, and educating the public about the importance of healthy coral reefs. The Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash helps fund these efforts, with the proceeds going directly to Reef Relief’s initiatives.
How The Bash Raises Money For Reef Relief
The bash primarily raises money through a raffle and a silent auction featuring a treasure trove of prizes donated by local businesses. Over the years, the prizes have only gotten better, making the raffle and auction some of the most anticipated aspects of the night. Add in the sales of Grateful Diver and Reef Relief merch and generous donations from attendees, and you’ve got a recipe for a successful fundraiser that makes a real difference.
Where & When To Join The Fun
Every year, the Deadhead community and locals come together at the iconic Green Parrot Bar to celebrate the life of Jerry Garcia, the legendary frontman of the Grateful Dead, and the band’s music. (His birthday is August 1!) Known for its laid-back atmosphere and live music, the Green Parrot sets the perfect stage for an evening of good tunes, dancing, and charity.
The bash typically kicks off at 5 PM and rolls late into the night, with everyone grooving to the sound of The Happy Dog, the local band led by frontman Jessie Wagner who has been a staple of the event from day one.
Celebrate With Us
The Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash has grown bigger and better each year, but it’s more than a fundraiser—it's a celebration of community, music, and ocean conservation.
Keep an eye on Grateful Diver's social channels for next year’s dates, mark your calendars, and help us spread the word! We’re excited for you to join us in celebrating Jerry's spirit, enjoying great music, and supporting an important cause.
